When Gilliane left Jamie’s chamber, she fled first to her own, getting lost on the way. Then, feeling confined by the walls, she sought out the kitchen garden. The stone path curved around the newly turned beds, and the earthy air competed with the tang of the sea. She paced to the far end, confused by the panic at seeing Jamie wounded, then the joy of being allowed to tend him, only to end with the feeling that he did not trust her, not even to see to his wound.

But he desired her…She could not forget how she’d tossed and turned in bed last eve, while her lips burned from his kisses. And sleep would not come no matter how she tried to think of all else but Jamie.

She wrapped her arms around her waist, for, foolishly, she had come out without her cloak. Although it was spring, in these northern lands of Scotland, so near the sea, the day was chill.

It was wrong of her to think of Jamie with the desire that burned within her. Wrong, too, she reminded herself, to give him liberties that belonged to one’s betrothed and none other. She had come here like a beggar maid. All she wore was borrowed finery, though generously and lovingly given, she did not deny.

The scrape of a boot on the pathway made her turn. Davey stood there, holding out her cloak.

“You forgot this. The day’s too cool to be without.”

She stood still while he slipped the wool over her shoulders. And when he made no move to leave her, she turned to him. “Was there something more you wanted?”

“’Tis to ask you to forgive Jamie’s temper. It was not meant for you. Being of an age together, we three brothers at times forget that we are men grown.”

His warm smile and kindly eyes begged her to smile back, and she did so gladly.

“He has much on his mind,” Davey continued, taking her arm to walk the paths with her.

Gilliane could not repress the pang of envy she felt. She was alone, without family to care about and dependent upon strangers for her very life. The envy was for the family love that lay so protectively over Halberry Castle.

“Lady Gilliane, please do not take what I ask amiss.”

“Ask or else how will I know what you wish?”

“Has my brother Jamie treated you with all honor due a maid in his care?”

“Mother of Mercy!” she cried, jerking her arm free of his. “What are you accusing me of?”

“Nay! Not you. I but wish to discover the source of Jamie’s anger. So I need be bold. Did my brother attempt to have his way with you?”

Gone were the smile and the kindly eyes. Here, too, she saw the dark temper that seemed to mark the three brothers. She shook her head, sending her braids swinging, though her verbal denial was a whisper.

Davey made a courtly bow. “I beg forgiveness. I assure you I meant no insult.”

Gilliane bit her lower lip.
